Brass Hex Bolt with collar
These threaded machine bolts, commonly called hexagonal head bolts or Hex Bolts with Collars, are designed for use with nuts or in pre-threaded holes. As the name suggests, these bolts feature a hexagonal head (six-sided) made of brass, allowing for easy tightening using a wrench or spanner.

Hex head bolts come in two types: fully threaded and partially threaded. The technical parameters include body diameter, width across flats and corners, head height, and thread length. Fully threaded bolts are used when paired with fully threaded holes, while partially threaded bolts provide increased holding strength, as the unthreaded section adds rigidity under load.
Hex Head Bolts vs. Hex Cap Screws
It’s common to confuse hex bolts with hex cap screws, but they differ in function and design. Hex bolts are tightened by turning the nut, typically without a washer face or chamfered point, and are ideal for construction applications. In contrast, hex cap screws are installed by turning the head and feature a washer face and chamfered point, making them suitable for precision applications with tighter tolerances.
Brass Hex Bolt with Collar
The standard thread length for hex bolts is determined by the bolt’s length and diameter. For bolts up to 6 inches long, the formula is (2 x diameter) + 1/4 inch, while for bolts over 6 inches, it’s (2 x diameter) + 1/2 inch. Brass hex bolts with collars are available in sizes ranging from 1/2 to 1 inch, with finishes such as plain or hot-dip galvanized, meeting ASTM A307 Grade A and F1554 Grade 36 standards.
